“Developing artists who have the confidence to be expressive, the vision to create, and the power to reflect.”
Intent
g
At Alkerden Academy, we understand that art is central to developing learners’ creativity, imagination, and ability to communicate ideas visually and conceptually. Our intent is to provide a rich and diverse curriculum that encourages exploration of media, materials, processes, and techniques, while fostering personal expression and critical thinking.
We aim to:
- Build confidence in using formal elements of art: line, shape, form, tone, texture, colour, pattern and composition.
- Develop creativity and imagination through practical making, exploration and personal response.
- Cultivate global awareness by engaging with a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople from different time periods, cultures and perspectives.
- Enable learners to communicate their ideas visually, verbally, and in written form, becoming reflective and self-aware artists.
Implementation
Learners have 2 art lessons a fortnight, following a carefully planned journey that builds technical skill, creative confidence, and critical awareness.
Implementation is enriched by:
- Independent sketchbook work, including home learning and artist research.
- Practical experimentation with a wide variety of 2D and 3D media.
- Collaborative making opportunities to develop teamwork and communication.
- Adaptations to ensure learners with additional needs are supported to thrive creatively.

Impact
j
The impact of Art at Alkerden Academy will be seen in the creativity, confidence and independence of our learners as artists and thinkers. By the time they leave, learners will:
- Have developed technical skill across a broad range of media, with the ability to apply the formal elements independently.
- Have experienced and responded to the work of a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers.
- Be able to reflect on and refine their own work and articulate their ideas both visually and verbally.
- Develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, resilience and time management.
Art at Alkerden reflects our Alkerden Heart - nurturing learners’ creativity, developing their self-awareness, and enabling them to connect to the wider world through visual expression.
Art and Design Learning Journey (KS3)
Our KS3 Art learning journey is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge, skills, and creative independence. As with all areas of the curriculum at Alkerden Academy, it remains responsive to the needs of our learners and may be adapted over time to ensure every learner can thrive.
