"Maths at Alkerden: developing deep understanding, confidence and resilience for all.”
Intent
At Alkerden Academy, we follow a mastery approach to mathematics, underpinned by the belief that every child can be a successful mathematician. Our intent is to foster a deep and sustainable understanding of concepts by encouraging mathematical thinking and making clear connections between topics. We want our learners to be confident, articulate, and resilient problem-solvers.
We aim to:
- Develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in all learners.
- Build conceptual understanding through intelligent practice and varied challenges.
- Foster a Growth Mindset, where students embrace challenges and learn from mistakes.
- Cultivate a rich and deep understanding of mathematical vocabulary to empower students to engage in high-quality mathematical talk.
Implementation
Learners have seven Maths lessons a fortnight. Our curriculum journey is carefully sequenced to build knowledge logically and ensure that all learners can succeed. New concepts are often introduced using a CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach, where possible, to build a solid foundation of understanding.
Implementation is enriched by:
- A focus on high-quality mathematical talk and discussion in the classroom.
- Access to Independent Learning to support independent practice.
- Regular opportunities for collaborative problem-solving to build resilience and communication skills.
Adaptations are made to ensure learners with additional needs are fully supported and can flourish in Maths.
Impact
The impact of our mastery approach will be seen in students who are confident and curious mathematicians.
By the time they leave, learners will:
- Have a deep and sustainable understanding of core mathematical ideas and be able to make connections between different areas of the curriculum.
- Be fluent in key procedures and able to apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to solve complex problems.
- Be able to reason mathematically and clearly articulate their thinking using precise vocabulary.
- Possess a Growth Mindset, showing resilience and a positive attitude toward tackling unfamiliar challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Above all, Maths at Alkerden reflects our Alkerden Heart - nurturing learners’ curiosity, developing logical thinking, and supporting every individual to flourish.
Mathematics in Key Stage 3 (KS3)
Our KS3 Mathematics learning journey is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge, skills, and creative independence. As with all areas of the curriculum at Alkerden Academy, it remains responsive to the needs of our learners and may be adapted over time to ensure every learner can thrive.
Mathematics Future Career Paths
Mathematics is a compulsory GCSE subject that all students must obtain before they leave full-time education. While students may not wish to study Maths beyond GCSE, the skills that are taught include problem-solving and analytical thinking, which are essential in the majority of career paths.
