"Inspiring active and healthy learners, where confidence and teamwork grow through sport."
Intent
At Alkerden Church of England Academy, Physical Education (PE) is rooted in our Christian vision for inclusion and hope, celebrating and honouring the uniqueness of each learner. Our intent is to provide an inclusive, ambitious, and engaging curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed, enjoy physical activity, and develop lifelong participation in sport.
Through PE, we nurture the whole learner, fostering physical competence, wellbeing, and character development. PE at Alkerden supports pupils to become confident, resilient, and socially responsible individuals, aligned to our Alkerden Heart values.
Our curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and aims to ensure all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Lead healthy, active lives.
Implementation
The PE curriculum at KS3 is broad and balanced, offering a wide range of activities that promote skill development, tactical understanding, physical fitness, leadership, and personal growth.
Sports and activities taught include: Football, Netball, Basketball, Rugby Union, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, and (from the new school site) Fitness. During Year 1, the offer will be adapted due to temporary accommodation, but all core activities will be introduced across KS3 to ensure progression and breadth.
PE lessons are delivered using evidence-informed pedagogical approaches:
- High-quality direct instruction with modelling and scaffolding.
- Cooperative learning structures (Kagan) to maximise participation and teamwork.
- Differentiated tasks to ensure accessibility for all learners, including SEND.
- Emphasis on literacy, communication, and use of subject-specific vocabulary.
- Formative assessment embedded through questioning, peer/self-assessment, and retrieval practice.
Extra-curricular opportunities complement the PE curriculum, offering competitive and recreational pathways, developing leadership and embedding a culture of physical activity beyond the classroom.

By the end of Key Stage 3, students at Alkerden CE Academy will:
