“Computing with Heart: Creators, Thinkers, Citizens” 

Intent

Our Key Stage 3 Computing curriculum aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a digital world. We want learners to move beyond being passive consumers of technology to become active creators and computational thinkers. 

The curriculum is designed to build a solid foundation in three key areas: 

  • Computer Science: Understanding the fundamental principles of computation, including abstraction, logic, algorithms, and data representation. 
  • Information Technology: Developing the skills to use current and future technologies purposefully to create, store, and manage digital content. 
  • Digital Literacy: Becoming safe, responsible, and critical users of technology, able to evaluate online information and understand their role as digital citizens. 

By the end of Key Stage 3, learners will be confident in using a range of technologies and will have the analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to tackle future challenges. 

Implementation

The curriculum is sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively from Year 7 to Year 9. Each year consists of six units, with two units taught per term. 

Lessons are designed to be practical and engaging, blending theoretical concepts with hands-on projects. We use a "scaffold, practice, apply" model, where the teacher first introduces and models a concept, learners then practice the skill in a guided environment, and finally apply it independently to a larger project or problem. 

A variety of software and platforms are used, including block-based programming (Scratch), text-based programming (Python), web development tools (HTML/CSS), and creative media applications. Unplugged activities are also used to teach complex concepts without the need for a computer. 

Assessment is ongoing through a mix of formative and summative methods. This includes direct questioning, observation during practical tasks, peer assessment, and end-of-unit projects or quizzes to assess student understanding and skill acquisition. Online safety is a constant thread woven through all units and is also taught explicitly. 

Impact

The intended impact of our curriculum is that learners will: 

  • Be able to understand and apply the fundamental principles of computer science. 
  • Become proficient programmers who can design, write, and debug programs to solve problems. 
  • Be creative and confident users of a range of information technology. 
  • Become safe, responsible, and discerning digital citizens who understand the legal and ethical implications of technology. 
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are transferable across all subject areas. 
  • Be well-prepared to study Computer Science at GCSE level and beyond. 

 

Computing in Key Stage 3 (KS3)

Our KS3 Computing learning journey is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge, skills, and creative independence. As with all areas of the curriculum at Alkerden Academy, it remains responsive to the needs of our learners and may be adapted over time to ensure every learner can thrive.

Computing Future Career Paths

Careers could include: computer programmer (building new software by coding solutions), system administrator (managing corporate networks and IT infrastructure), computer technician (diagnosing and solving hardware and software-based problems).
