PE

At Alkerden, we believe that physical education is fundamental to the development of healthy, confident and resilient learners. Our PE curriculum is built on a foundation of skill development, enjoyment and inclusive participation, ensuring every learner has access to high-quality physical activity, and the opportunity to discover their strengths and interests.

Intent

Our PE curriculum is designed to enable learners to:

  • Develop skills and competences to participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities.

  • Build confidence, coordination, strength, agility, and sporting talent.

  • Understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

  • Develop personal qualities such as resilience, collaboration, fairness, and respect.

The curriculum is inclusive, ensuring learners with additional needs (SEND) have access to lessons and challenges suited to their abilities. Our broad and engaging PE offer encourages enjoyment of school and supports learners to thrive both physically and personally.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum follows the National Curriculum objectives, adapted to the needs of our learners. Key points include:

  • Learners are supported to apply technical skills, understand tactics, and evaluate their own performance and that of others.
  • Extracurricular clubs, competitions, and annual events such as Sports Day offer learners experiences of teamwork, competition, and leadership.
  • Playtimes and lunchtimes provide additional opportunities for active games and fitness.
  • Skills are sequenced and revisited regularly to build long-term understanding and competence.
  • Learners receive at least 2 hours of PE per week through structured lessons.

Impact

By the time learners leave Alkerden C of E Academy, we expect them to be physically confident, active, resilient, collaborative and health-conscious individuals. Through our PE curriculum, we will ensure they:

  • have a broad repertoire of physical skills, coordination, balance, agility, strength, control, that enables participation in a wide variety of activities and sports;

  • understand the value of regular physical activity and have developed healthy habits for life;

  • enjoy being active, feel confident in their physical ability, and have the self-belief to try new sports or activities;

  • demonstrate strong values such as respect, fairness, teamwork and resilience, both in sport and more broadly;

  • can work well independently, in pairs, or in teams; and show leadership, cooperation and sportsmanship when playing or competing;

  • appreciate physical education as a vital part of their education, not just as exercise, but as a way to build character, social skills, wellbeing and confidence.

Through a varied, inclusive and engaging PE offer, we aim to develop learners who see physical activity not as an optional extra, but as an essential part of their lifestyle, equipping them for healthy, active lives beyond their time at Alkerden.

Physical Education Across the Stages

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Learners develop fundamental skills such as running, jumping, hopping, balance, and coordination. They also take part in dance, movement, and simple competitive games to prepare for multi-skills Sports Day.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2)

Learners refine fundamental movement skills and begin to participate in team games, gymnastics, dance, and athletics. Lessons emphasise enjoyment, cooperation, and developing confidence in physical activities.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6)

Learners engage in a broader range of sports, including team games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and swimming. Competitive opportunities, leadership roles, and extra-curricular activities allow learners to experience teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship.

Inclusion & Support

PE lessons and activities will be adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with additional needs, to ensure inclusive access and challenge for all.  Learners are encouraged to participate at their own developmental level, whether that means building fundamental skills, refining techniques, or leading and supporting others.

Wider Opportunities & Enrichment

  • We offer a range of lunchtime and after-school clubs to cater to different interests, from team sports to dance, gymnastics, fitness and active play.

  • We host whole-school events such as Sports Day and Trust competitions to give learners the experience of competing in front of an audience, building confidence, team spirit and pride in achievement.

  • PE is not just physical development, it supports learners’ social, emotional and moral development. Through sportsmanship, collaboration, resilience and working towards shared goals, we embed our school values in physical activity.

  • Cross-curricular links and active learning: Where appropriate, learning in PE will link with other subjects (e.g., health, biology, personal wellbeing) to deepen understanding of lifelong fitness, wellbeing, and healthy habits.
