RE
Our RE provision at Alkerden C of E Academy is designed to enrich learners’ understanding of faith, belief and worldviews, helping them to explore their own identity, respect diversity, reflect on big questions, and grow as compassionate, thoughtful members of our community and the wider world.

Intent
At Alkerden, we aim for our RE curriculum to enable learners to:
-
Develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other major world religions and beliefs, recognising the diverse ways people make meaning of life.
-
Reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences, making connections between religion, spirituality, morality and their daily lives.
-
Respect and appreciate difference, cultivating empathy, compassion and understanding for people from varied backgrounds and faith traditions.
-
Develop spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness and maturity, gaining insight into what it means to live with integrity, kindness and responsibility.
-
Grow a sense of belonging to the local and global community, understanding how faith, belief and values shape individuals, communities and society.
Our RE curriculum supports the Christian ethos of the school, while ensuring that all learners, regardless of background, feel valued, included and respected.
Implementation
Our RE curriculum is built on a carefully sequenced programme, offering progressive learning across all key stages, including Early Years. Lessons and activities include enquiry, discussion, reflection and engagement with religious stories, beliefs, practices, festivals, moral questions and world views.
Within each class, learners will:
-
Study Christianity in depth, while also exploring a range of other faiths and beliefs represented in our society, for example, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and non-religious world views.
-
Our approach is inclusive, ensuring all learners, including those with additional learning needs, are supported and challenged. Teachers adapt planning as necessary to meet the needs of all learners and facilitate meaningful engagement for everyone.
-
Experience links between RE and other areas of the curriculum, including personal, social, moral, cultural and spiritual development. Collective worship and the school’s Christian values underpin the ethos of our RE provision.
-
Record their learning in age-appropriate ways: in individual books, class scrapbooks, through drawings, writing, discussion, and other creative formats.
-
Reflect on their own values and beliefs, and consider moral and ethical issues in light of religious teachings and different perspectives.
-
Engage with enquiry-based units, asking key questions that prompt personal response, exploration of beliefs, comparison of world views, and meaningful group discussion.
-
Encounter RE through a variety of formats, including storytelling, artefacts, roleplay, discussion, reflection, creative tasks and, where possible, visits to places of worship or visits from community faith representatives.
Impact
Through our RE curriculum, learners at Alkerden will:
-
Acquire a broad and balanced knowledge of Christianity and other world religions, including their beliefs, practices, festivals, moral teachings and impact on individuals and communities.
-
Develop a reflective, open-minded and thoughtful approach to religion, belief and life’s big questions.
-
Grow in empathy, compassion and respect for diversity, appreciating that people may hold different beliefs and values.
-
Be able to articulate their own ideas, beliefs and values respectfully, and listen with understanding to the views of others.
-
Demonstrate spiritual, moral, social and cultural maturity, applying the values of kindness, fairness, respect and responsibility in their daily lives.
-
Feel a strong sense of belonging to their local community and the wider world, recognising their role as responsible, reflective citizens in a diverse society.
-
Be well-prepared for future education and life beyond school; equipped with religious literacy, moral awareness, empathy and a respect for difference that supports social cohesion and mutual understanding.
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE lessons. This request must be made in writing to the Head of School. Parents are strongly advised to consult with the school to seek further information on the RE curriculum and the approach to teaching and learning before any decision is made.
Religious Education Across the Stages
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Learners begin to explore themes of belonging, family, community and celebration. They hear simple stories from faith traditions, learn about festivals and rituals, and learn through play, discussion and creative activities. They begin to recognise the diversity of family backgrounds, cultures and beliefs within the school community and the wider world.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2)
Learners explore Christianity and at least one other faith or world view. They learn about stories, celebrations, key beliefs and practices, and begin to consider moral themes such as kindness, sharing and respect. Activities include storytelling, roleplay, art, discussion and simple reflective tasks.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6)
Learners deepen their understanding of Christianity and explore additional world religions and world views. They examine beliefs, practices, values, rituals, festivals, moral and spiritual questions. Through enquiry, discussion and reflection, they consider how religion and belief influence individuals and communities, how faith shapes identity, and how moral and ethical decisions arise. Learners are encouraged to express their own thoughts and beliefs while listening respectfully to others.
Inclusion & Support
Religious Education at Alkerden C of E Academy is inclusive and accessible to all learners. We value the diverse backgrounds, beliefs and experiences within our school community and ensure that every child feels respected, supported and able to engage meaningfully in RE.
Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND and EAL, through differentiated activities, practical resources, visual support, discussion and alternative ways of recording learning. Lessons provide a safe and respectful space for exploration and reflection, where learners are never required to express personal beliefs and all viewpoints are valued.
Through this inclusive approach, RE supports learners’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and helps them to grow as confident, compassionate members of our school community.
