Welcome to Bumblebees Class

We understand that the transition into Year 1 is an important step, and we carefully support our learners as they move into a more structured curriculum, while still maintaining a sense of curiosity, creativity, and enjoyment in their learning.

In Year 1, learners follow the National Curriculum through an engaging and aspirational approach that builds on their early experiences. Our curriculum is designed to be purposeful and inspiring, encouraging learners to develop strong communication skills, think deeply and express themselves with confidence. We provide meaningful opportunities for learners to explore ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively, while also developing kindness, resilience and respect for others.

Early reading, writing, and mathematics remain a key focus in Year 1 and are taught in practical, engaging and accessible ways. We aim to foster a lifelong love of reading for pleasure and support learners to become confident writers and mathematicians through carefully planned teaching and supportive guidance.

We are proud to provide a language-rich environment where learners are encouraged to share their ideas, listen to others and grow as confident communicators. Through thoughtful teaching, questioning, and ongoing assessment, we ensure that all learners are supported and appropriately challenged to achieve their full potential.

At Alkerden, we value the importance of strong relationships with our families. We operate an open-door policy and encourage regular communication, working closely with parents and carers to support each learner’s development. We also use the online platform Seesaw to share learning experiences and celebrate ‘WOW’ moments, helping you stay connected with your child’s journey in school.

We look forward to working in partnership with you and supporting your child as they grow, learn, and flourish in Year 1.

Timetable

Our timetable can be downloaded below. Here, parents and pupils have the opportunity to view the class schedule to see the day-to-day routine including the range of curricula that is covered. We have found that children with SEND have responded well to visually seeing the structure of the day ahead.

Curriculum

Our learning this year will be based on the topics below and will change accordingly each term. Parents will receive a topic web and home learning grid at the start of each term informing them about what the children will be learning. This will also be available below to download.
